Factors Associated with Early Marriage in Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang, North Sumatera

ABSTRACT

Background: Early marriage is one of the many social phenomena happening in various places in the country. Indonesia ranks 37th which has the number of early marriages in the world. Early marriage occurs due to the physical, economic, and socio-cultural characteristics of the community. This leads to low level of women’s education. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with early marriage in Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang, North Sumatera.

Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in Desa Baru Village, Pancur Batu, Deli Serdang, North Sumatera. A sample of 139 females who married under 20 years was selected for this study by total sampling. The dependent variable was early marriage. The independent variables were knowledge, belief, and the value of virginity. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multiple logistic regression.

Results: Early marriage was associated with belief (OR= 2.64; 95% CI= 1.12 to 6.63; p= 0.027), low knowledge (OR= 4.09; 95% CI= 1.58 to 10.62; p= 0.004), and the negative value of virginity (OR= 6.06; 95% CI= 1.86 to 19.80; p= 0.003).

Conclusion: Early marriage is associated with belief, low knowledge, and the value of virginity.
