Do Shelters of Batik Solo Trans Bus Accessible for People with Disabilities?

ABSTRACT

Background: Access to public transportation is one of the biggest issues for people with disabilities (PWDs). In some developing countries awareness is growing of the need to gradually remove barriers in the transport environment. This study aimed to de­ter­mine the accessibility for PWDs in accessing the Solo Trans Batik bus shelter in Sura­karta.

Subjects and Method: This was an explorative qualitative study conducted in Surakarta, Central Java. The key informants were PWDs. The theme of this study was acces­sibility to public transportation. The data were collected by in-depth interview, obser­vation, and documentation. The data were analyzed using triangulation method.

Results: People with disabilities experienced difficulties in accessing bus shelter because of architectural barriers. Shelter design did not met accessibility standards.

Conclusion: Solo Trans Batik bus shelter in Surakarta is not accessible for people with disabilities.
