The Effect of Family Support on People with Mental Disorder in Sungai Besar Community Health Center, Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan

ABSTRACT

Background: It is now well recognized that mental health is a significant issue in Indo­nesia. Fa­mily, as primary caregivers for persons with mental health disorder, are in­creasingly recog­nized for their potential role in fostering mental health and well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of family support on people with mental disorder.

Subjects and Method: This was a descriptive qualitative study conducted at Sungai Besar Com­munity Health Center, Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. A sample of 25 key in­for­mants with mental disorder and their family was selected for this study purposive­ly. The study variable was fa­mily support. The data were collected by questionnaire.

Results: As many as 56% people with mental health disorder received strong family su­p­­port. Forms of family support included emotion, finance, instrument, and infor­ma­tion.

Conclusion: Family support is needed by people with mental health disorder.
