Background: Depression is one of the leading cause of disability and main contributor to the global burden disease. Depression occurs in 7% of the older adult population. Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment and accepting it without judgment. Mindfulness is now being examined scientifically and has been found to be a key element in stress reduction and overall happiness. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of Islamic Spiritual Based Mindfulness (ISBM) on the reduction of depression among the elderly at the nursing home.

Subjects and Method:This was a quasi-experiment before and after with no control design. The study was conducted at Mahendra nursing home. A total of 19 elderly with depression was selected for this study. The dependent variable was depression. The independent variable was ISBM. Depression score was measured by Geriatric Depression Scale. The other data were collected by questionnaire. The data were analyzed by chi square.

Results: After ISBM intervention, 4 elderly had depression scores <5, 11 elderly had depression scores 5-9, and 4 elderly had depression scores ≥10. Mean score of depression reduced after ISBM intervention and it was statistically significant.
