Portable Android-Based Blood Pressure, Heartrate, and Temperature Monitoring Device for Practical Patient Solution

ABSTRACT

Background: Blood pressure, heartrate, and temperature (BHT) monitoring is an essential routine examination to show vital signs. BHT monitoring technology can improve the management of health care. BHT monitoring can be used to screen cardiovascular diseases. We developed a portable android-based BHT monitoring device using smartphone.

Subjects and Method: A prototype device was manufactured at Medical Instrumentation laboratory, Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, East Java, and tested at Universitas Airlangga Hospital and Prodia Laboratory. This study proceeded in 8 stages: (1) Literature review; (2) Preparation of tool and material; (3) Hardware manufacture; (4) Software manufacture; (5) Calibration of circuit and tool; (6) Device  testing; (7) Data collection; and (8) Data analysis. This device consisted of 3 sensors: (1) MPX5050dp for blood pressure; (2) MPX5050 for heart rate; and (3) LM35dz for temperature. Androidbased software was designed using Eclipse and Java programming. The prototype device was tested against digital blood pressure and heart rate gauge and digital thermometer for reliability test on 2 normal human subjects with 5 times measurement.

Results: There were differences in the result of measurement between BHT device and digital blood pressure, heart rate, and thermometer. However, these differences were not statistically significant meaning that the BHT device measurement was reliable.

Conclusion: A portable android-based BHT device has been developed to measure blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature. This portable device has demonstrated reliability for use. The slight measurement difference may stem from the sensors. However, the right sensor must be obtained from overseas and it takes a long time.
