Factors Associated with The Development of Children Aged 4-6 Years in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara

ABSTRACT

Background: Preschool programs provide early childhood education and care for children. Early childhood education in kindergarten consists of a number of activities and experiences designed to help children to acquire cognitive, social, and learningrelated skills. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with the development of children aged 4-6 years.

Subjects and Method: A cross sectional study was carried out at Aisyiah kindergarten in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. A sample of 74 children aged 4-6 years was selected for this study by probability sampling. The dependent variable was development. The independent variables were maternal education and parity. Child development was measured by Denver development screening test. The other variables were collected by questionnaire. The data were analyzed by a multiple logistic regression.

Results: Parity <3 (OR= 3.97; 95% CI= 1.11 to 14.23; p= 0.034) and higher maternal education (OR= 2.10; 95% CI= 0.62 to 7.12; p= 0.232) were associated with better child development.

Conclusion: Parity and maternal education are associated with child development.
