ABSTRACT

Background: Studies reported that knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability in older adults. Therefore, knee OA has a significant negative impact on health related quality of life among the elderly. This study was conducted to explore factors affecting the quality of life of patients with knee OA using path analysis model. Subjects and Method: A cross sectional study was carried out at Dr. Moewardi hos- pital and Universitas Sebelas Maret hospital, in Surakarta, Central Java. A sample of 180 patients with knee OA was selected for this study by consecutive sampling. The dependent variable was quality of life. The independent variables were sex, body mass index (BMI), duration of illness, pain area, and occupation. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by path analysis.

Results: Quality of life of patients with knee OA directly deteriorated with obesity (b= -1.64; 95% CI= -2.35 to -0.93; p<0.001), female (b= -1.17; 95% CI= -1.88 to -0.47; p= 0.001), length of illness >6 months (b= -0.79; 95% CI= -1.49 to -0.98; p= 0.025), and bilateral pain area (b= -0.74; 95% CI= -1.42 to -0.05; p= 0.034). Quality of life of pati- ents with knee OA was indirectly affected by sex through obesity.

Conclusion: Quality of life of patients with knee OA directly deteriorated with obesity, female, length of illness >6 months, and bilateral pain area. Quality of life of patients with knee OA is indirectly affected by sex through obesity.
