Patient Experience and Expectation Regarding Asthma Drug Information Provided by Pharmacists: A Qualitative Study

ABSTRACT

Background: Drug information provided by pharmacists is a critical component of pharmaceutical care to promote safe and effective use of medications and to maximize therapeutic outcomes. This information is provided orally or in written form to the patients or their representatives concerning direction of use, advice on side effects, precaution, and drug storage. Comprehensive drug information may increase patient‘s knowledge and satisfaction with the pharmacy service. This study aimed to investigate the patient experience and expectation regarding asthma drug information provided by pharmacists.

Subjects and Method: This was a qualitative study. A sample 15 patients with asthma were selected for this study. The theme of this study was patient experience and expectation regarding asthma drug information provided by pharmacists. The data obtained by in-depth interview. The data were analyzed by content analysis.

Results: Five patients received useful drug information regarding asthma from the pharmacist regarding appropriate medication and how to improve adherence. The information included how to wash the inhaler and to do mouthwash after using inhaler. Other patients, however, received limited drug information regarding asthma. All of the patients expected to receive more detailed information regarding asthma from the pharmacist.

Conclusions: Pharmacists should enhance their roles based on pharmaceutical care paradigm to improving the healthy status patients with asthma.
