Experiences of Adolescents to Become Mother: A Scoping Review

Background: Adolescence is a critical transition stage from childhood to adulthood. Marriage and early pregnancy in adolescents are one of the factors that result in the changing role of adolescents into adolescent mothers. This study aimed to examine the experience and support needed by adolescent mothers at the beginning of becoming a mother.

Subjects and Method: This was a scoping review conducted by searching for articles published from 2009 to 2019, from the databases of PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley and EBSCO. The Inclusion criteria were articles conducted in developed and developing countries, peer review articles, primary research, and WHO guidelines and articles that discuss experiences of mothers in adolescence at the beginning of motherhood. The data were reported by PRISMA flow diagram.

Results: 15 articles were selected from 410 articles. Two mains thematic of experience of mother adolescent in early mother. Being a mother in adolescence poses great challenge and new responsibility. The support received by adolescent mothers greatly affects the psychological and emotional state of the mother in carrying out her new role from the closest people and the social environment.

Conclusion: The physical, psychological readiness and support received by adolescent mothers significantly affect the mother’s condition in carrying out her responsibilities.
