Effect of Remakuda Juice on Hemoglobin Level and Dysmenorrhea in Female Adolescents

ABSTRACT

Background: Menstruation can cause dysmenorrhea and decreased hemoglobin level. Decreased hemoglobin level in female adolescents may be associated with reduced intelligence, learning achievement, and motor development. Remakuda juice contains lemon grass, young coconut water, and dates, which help increase hemoglobin level and reduce the intensity of dysmenorrhea. This study aimed to determine the effect of Rema­kuda juice on increasing hemoglobin and decreasing the intensity of dysmenorrhea in female adolescents.

Subjects and Method: This was a quasi experiment using one group pre-test post-test with no control design. This study was conducted in SMPN I Tembelang, Jombang, East Java. A sample of 60 female students was selected for this study. The independent variable was Remakuda Juice. The dependent variable was hemoglobin level and dys­menorrhea. Hemoglobin level was measured using a digital haemometer. Dysmenorrhea was measured by Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and Wong-Baker Pain Rating Scale. The data were analyzed by paired t-test.

Results: Mean hemoglobin level after intervention (Mean= 2.00; SD= 0.00) was higher than before intervention (Mean=1.73; SD=0.45), and it was statistically significant (p= 0.047). Mean dysmenorrhea score after intervention (Mean= 1.43; SD= 0.59) was lower than before intervention (Mean= 2.70; SD= 0.65), and it was statistically significant (p= 0.023).

Conclusion: Remakuda juice is effective to increase hemoglobin level and to reduce dysmenorrhea intensity in female adolescents with menstruation.
