ABSTRACT

Background: SARS-CoV-2 is highly contagious. The human-to-human transmission of this infection through coughing, sneezing, and the spread of respiratory droplets or aerosols. Staying at home, avoiding any direct contact with any healthy or infected person, avoiding crowded public places, avoiding shaking hands when greeting others, frequently washing hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer, and using disposal medical mask and or face shield have been recommended to prevent COVID-19 transmission. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of face mask-wearing behavior to prevent COVID-19 transmission.

Subjects and Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by PRISMA flow diagram. The articles were collected from Google Scholar, Pubmed, and Science Direct databases. Keywords used mask OR Surgical mask OR cloth mask AND “covid” AND adjusted odds ratio. Eligibility criteria were defined using the PICO model as follows, (1) population: general population, (2) intervention: face mask-wearing behavior, (3) comparison: did not wear face mask, and (4) outcome: COVID-19 transmission. The inclusion criteria were full text, reported adjusted odds ratio, published from year 2020 to 2021. Articles that met the criteria were analyzed by Revman 5.3.

Results: 7 studies from Ethiopia, China, Uganda, Japan, Unites States, and Taiwan. This study showed that face mask-wearing behavior mitigated the COVID-19 transmission 1.51 times (aOR= 1.51; 95% CI= 1.23 to 1.85; p<0.001).

Conclusion: Face mask-wearing behavior mitigate the COVID-19 transmission.

Keywords: face mask-wearing behavior, COVID-19 transmission
