Phenomenology Study of Parental Experience in Caring for Children with Acute Leukemia

ABSTRACT

Background: Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It progresses quickly and aggressively and requires immediate treat­ment. The purpose of this study was to explore parents caring role in children with acute leukemia.

Subjects and Method: A qualitative study with phenomenology perspective was carried out at Dr. Kariadi Hospital, Semarang. Key informant was parent. They were selected for this study by purposive sampling. The study instruments were mobile phone and observation sheet. The data were collected by in-depth interview, observa­tion and document analysis. Interview transcript were transformed into data and it was analyzed using analysis interactive model from Miles and Huberman.

ResultsThis study found 3 themes of parental experience in caring for children with acute leukemia, including early diagnosis, child treatment, and barriers. Parental initial reaction to the acute leukemia diagnosis was sad, shocked, and deny the reality. Those feelings prompted parents to learn and find out the medical treatment information. fight for the treatment of children with various challenges such as the challenges of children’s physiological problems, nutritional adequacy problems and socio-economic problems during the treatment process. The challenges of treating children with acute leukemia include the child’s physiological problems, nutritional adequacy, and lack of socioeconomic conditions during the treatment process.

Conclusion3 themes of parental experience in caring for children with acute leukemia, including early diagnosis, child treatment, and barriers.
