Background: A woman has an increased risk of breast cancer if her lifelong estrogen exposure is increased due to an early menarche, a late menopause, and/or an absence of childbearing. Recent epidemiological data have shown that late postmenopause has a significant effect on the risk of breast cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate obesity as a risk of breast cancer in post menopause women.

Subjects and Method: This was a systematic review and meta-analysis. Using the PubMed, Google Scholar, SpringerLink, and Science Direct database, a literature search was conducted for observational studies (published from 2010 to 2021) on the effect of obesity and breast cancer. The following search terms were used: “obesity OR BMI OR “body mass index” AND “breast cancer” OR “breast carcinoma” AND “postmenopausal women”. The inclusion criteria were English full text and reported adjusted odds ratio. The systematic review was carried out according to the PRISMA guidelines. Data analyses were performed using RevMan 5.3.

Results: 10 studies from Tunisia, Africa, Nigeria, Arabia, Iran, Poland, Japan, San Francisco, Brazil, and Guatemala, were involved to meta-analysis. There was high heterogeneity between studies (I2= 78%; p= 0.05). A random effect model found that obesity increased the risk of breast cancer in postmenopause women (aOR= 1.40; 95% CI= 0.99 to 1.96; p= 0.05).

Conclusion: Obesity increased the risk of breast cancer in postmenopause women.

Keywords: obesity, breast cancer, postmenopause
