ABSTRACT

Background: Nutritional status reflects the balance between food intake and nutritional requirement for the body’s metabolism. Many Indonesian children had nutritional problems. Efforts had been taken to improve breakfast habit and to practice clean and healthy behavior. This study aimed to determine the effect of breakfast habit and clean and healthy living behavior on nutritional status.

Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at an elementary school in Jatisura Majalengka, West Java. A total of 180 primary students from grades 1 to 6 were selected for this study.  The dependent variable was nutritional status. The independent variables were breakfast habit and clean healthy behavior. Nutritional status was measured based on body mass index. The other data were obtained by questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Spearman rank test.

Results: A total of 121 children (67.2%) had good nutritional status, meanwhile 27 children (15.0%) were underweight, and 18 children (10%) were obese. A total of 124 children (68.9%) had good clean healthy behavior habits and only 2 children (1.10%) had bad clean healthy behavior. Breakfast habit was correlated with nutritional status and it was statistically significant (p= 0.001). Clean healthy behavior had non significantly correlation with child nutritional status (p= 0.848).

Conclusion: Good breakfast habit positively affects nutritional status of children.
