ABSTRACT

Background: Facilitation of a good childbirth experience requires use of self-comforting techniques that can help relieve pain and enhance labor progress. Yoga is an intervention based on mind and body interconnectedness, is one non-pharmacological method that can be used for assisting with and help women become accustomed to the natural, instinctive yoga-like positions often preferred during labor and delivery. Therefore, yoga can be an effective way to empower women during labor and to assist in attaining and maintaining their optimal level of functioning. This stduy aimed to investigate the effect of prenatal yoga on birth labor duration using systematic review and meta-analysis.

Subjects and Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by collecting articles published from 2005 to 2021. Articles search source were PubMed, Science Direct, Springer Link, Google Scholar, and Chorance Library databases. The inclusion criteria were English full text and randomized controlled trial. The articles were filtered using PICO model, including: (1) Population= pregnant women, (2) intervention= prenatal yoga, (3) comparison= non prenatal yoga, and (4) outcome= labor duration. Quantitative data analysis was processed by calculating standardized mean difference using Review Manager (RevMan 5.3).

Results: 9 articles were included for this meta-analysis. This study reported that prenatal yoga lowered labor duration (SMD= 0.88; 86% CI= -1.31 to -0.44 p<0.001).

Conclusion: Prenatal yoga lowers labor duration.

Keywords: labor duration, prenatal yoga, randomized controlled trial
