The Effect of Puzzle Games on Cognitive Development of Children Aged 5-6 Years in Bandar Lampung

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: Eighty percent of brain growth develops in the gestation period and early childhood, and the remaining 20% develops in later life. In the learning process, early childhood often uses fun games by learning while playing, including the use of educational games, such as puzzles. This study aimed to determine the effect of puzzle games on the cognitive development among children aged 5-6 years.

Subjects and Method: This was a before and after one group with no control quasi-experiment conducted at Tunas Permata Kindergarten, Bandar Lampung, in January 2021. A total of 16 children aged 5-6 years were selected for this study. The dependent variable was cognitive development. The independent variable was puzzlehe data were collected by using SDIDTK observation sheet and tested by Wilcoxon test.

Results: Mean score of cognitive development after intervention (Mean= 8.88; SD= 0.34) was higher than that before intervention (Mean= 7.19; SD= 1.16), and it was statistically significant (p<0.001).

Conclusion: Puzzle games is effective to improve cognitive development for children aged 5 to 6 years.
