Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is the third leading cause of death in Indonesia. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus was estimated at 8.5% in 2018. This study aimed to determine factors associated with the occurrence type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Subjects and Method: This was a cross-sectional study conducted at the Internal Medicine Polyclinic, Adam Malik Hospital, in Medan, from April to May, 2021. A random sample of 99 outpatients were selected for this study. The dependent variable was type 2 diabetes mellitus. The independent variables were physical activity, history of hypertension, and family history. The data were collected from the medical record and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by chi-square test.
Results: The risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus increased with a lack of physical activity (OR= 3.33; 95% CI= 1.59 to 6.95; p= 0.001), history of hypertension (OR= 1.94; 95% CI= 1.37 to 2.74; p= 0.001), and family history (OR= 3.04; 95% CI= 1.37 to 2.74; p= 0.001).
Conclusion: The risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus increases with a lack of physical activity, history of hypertension, and family history.
