Abstract

Background: Co-morbidities may contribute to the poor outcomes of COVID-19 patients. However, previous research on the associations between hypertension, oxygen saturation level, and death in COVID-19 patients was inconclusive. This study sought to investigate factors related to the mortality risk of COVID-19.

Subjects and Method: This was a retrospective cohort study. A sample of 304 COVID-19 inpatients was selected randomly for this study from Jati Husada Hospital, Karanganyar, Central Java, from November 2020 to September 2021. The dependent variable was death. The independent variables were hypertension and oxygen saturation level. Data were obtained from medical records. The data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression.

Results: The risk of death in COVID-19 patients increased with hypertension (OR= 3.68; 95% CI= 1.28 to 10.58; p= 0.016) and low oxygen saturation (OR= 0.02; 95% CI= 0.01 to 0.06; p<0.001).

Conclusion: The risk of death in COVID-19 patients increases with hypertension and low oxygen saturation.
