Abstract

Background: A health screening test is a medical test or procedure performed on members of an asymptomatic population to early detect those who are likely to have a particular disease. The screening test is performed before symptoms appear to allow early detection and prompt treatment. In the current study, an educational model was developed to incorporate the screening positive test results with an educational training session targeted at housewives. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of this educational model on the knowledge about diabetes mellitus prevention.

Subjects and Method: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in Kalipare village, Malang, East Java, Indonesia. A total of 100 housewives who were previously found positive at the health screening were selected at random for this study. This sample was divided into two groups at random: (1) Fifty housewives receiving the educational model; and (2) Fifty housewives not receiving the educational model. The independent variable was the educational model implemented after a health screening with in-class training using multimedia. The dependent variable was knowledge about diabetes mellitus prevention. The dependent variable was measured before and after the intervention. The mean difference in knowledge scores between the two groups after the intervention was tested by t-test.

Results: Mean knowledge about diabetes mellitus prevention in the educational model group (Mean= 22.96; SD= 1.67) was higher than the control group (Mean= 10.92; SD= 3.00), and it was statistically significant (p <0.001).

Conclusion: The educational model after health screening effectively improves the knowledge about diabetes mellitus prevention among housewives detected positive at the health screening test. It is recommended that any health screening be followed up with educational training to prevent the occurrence of disease.
