Abstract
Background: Youth violence is a serious problem that can have lasting harmful effects on victims and their families, friends, and communities. Reducing violence among youth will require a multifaced approach, including educational strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of high-risk behaviors associated with youth violence. This scoping review aimed to explore, identify, and synthesize the existing body of literature on health education intervention for the prevention of violence in adolescents.
Subjects and Method: This was a scoping review following the PRISMA flow diagrams with research questions formulated in PICO format. Population: Adolescents. Intervention: Health education intervention. Comparison: No health education intervention. Outcome: Prevention of violence. The relevant articles were searched from PubMed, Google Scholar, and other relevant sources. The keywords were “violent adolescents” OR “teenagers” AND “intervention” OR “treatment” AND “Prevention”. The included articles were full-text papers published in English between 2021 to 2023. Articles were analyzed descriptively.
Results: A total of 14 articles were reviewed. Most of the health education interventions preventing violence were either school-based or web-based. Adolescents who participated in health education intervention developed better knowledge and more positive attitudes about non-violent conflict resolution. In addition, the participating adolescents respected others and averted violence in a relationship. School-based anti-violence prevention programs combined with the multimedia web-based method was more effective in preventing youth violence.
Conclusion: Various health education interventions have been developed and implemented worldwide to prevent youth violence in the form of either school-based, web-based, or both.
Keywords: health education, violence, adolescents, scoping review
