Abstract
Background: UNICEF reports that there is an increase in the number of children experiencing delays in fine motor development. This is due to a decrease in the stimulation of small muscles, a lack of opportunities for children to learn motor skills, and excessive parental protection. One form of stimulation that can improve fine motor development in children is playing with mosaics. This study aimed to determine the effect of mosaic play activities on fine motor development in preschool children.
Subjects and Method: A quasi-experimental study with a control group design was conducted at Pertiwi Kindergarten, Piji Village, Dawe District, Kudus, Central Java from September to November 2022. A sample of 12 children with suspected fine motor development were selected for this study and divided into 2 groups: (1) 6 children were given mosaic play; and (2) 6 children in the control group. The dependent variable was fine motor. The independent variable was mosaic play. The fine motor was measured using a Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST)-II. The mosaic play activity was carried out 24 times over 8 weeks for 10 to 20 minutes. The data were analyzed by the Wilcoxon test.
Results: The mean difference in fine motor was lower after the intervention of mosaic play activities than before the intervention, and it was statistically significant (p= 0.008).
Conclusion: Mosaic play improve fine motor among preschool children.
