Abstract

Background: Adolescence is one of life’s most fascinating and complex life stages and is accompanied by special reproductive health (RH) needs. Adolescents face a range of health and social challenges. Initiation of sexual activity while they lack adequate knowledge and skills for protection poses adolescents at a higher risk of (1) Unwanted pregnancy; (2) Unsafe abortion; and (3) Sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. This scoping review aimed to explore and synthesize the existing body of literature on the educational model of RH for adolescents.

Subjects and Method: This scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA flow diagram and PICO research question. Population: Adolescents. Intervention: Educational model of RH. Comparison: No educational model of RH. Outcome: Knowledge, attitude, and behavior of RH. The articles were searched from databases PubMed. Keywords used “adolescent” OR “teen” OR “teenager” AND “reproductive health education” OR “sex education” OR “sexual education” AND “knowledge” AND “attitude” AND “behavior”.  The inclusion criteria were RCT studies on adolescent RH and sexual education, published from 2018 to 2023, in English.

Results: The scoping review included 11 studies from Asia (n= 1), Africa (n= 5), Europe (n= 2), and America (n= 3). Most of the recent educational models of RH for adolescents were digital-based, including web-based media, online animation films, mHealth, and computer-based. Other educational models included school-based peer education using comprehensive sexual education and peer-to-peer counseling.

Conclusion: Access to youth-friendly services is deemed critical to ensuring sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and the psychological well-being of adolescents. Various educational models, both conventional and digital-based, have been developed and implemented worldwide to improve this access.

Keywords: scoping review, reproductive health, educational model, adolescents.
