Abstract

Background: Disasters that occur have not only physical impacts but also psychological impacts on families. Increasing family psychological preparedness for disasters is very necessary. This study aimed to determine the effect of psychoeducation on family psychological preparedness for disaster.

Subjects and Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study conducted in the working areas of the Salaman 1 and Mertoyudan 1 Community Health Centers, Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 62 families were selected for this study using purposive sampling. The sample was divided into two groups: (1) intervention group with family psychoeducation regarding disasters; and (2) Control group. The dependent variable was family psychological preparedness. The independent variable was family psychoeducation regarding disasters. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire on family psychological preparedness for disasters. The data were analyzed using paired T-test.

Results: Before the intervention, the average psychological preparedness scores in the experimental group (Mean= 34.45; SD= 3.04) was not statistically different from the control group (Mean=33.06; SD= 3.17) with p=0.152. After the intervention, the average psychological preparedness scores in the experimental group (Mean= 39.10; SD=4.01) was higher than the control group (Mean= 27.65; SD= 3.62), and it was statistically significant (p<0.001).
